Nguồn gốc của thành ngữ này không chắc chắn nhưng có một số câu chuyện khác nhau liên quan đến nó. Một trong những câu chuyện phổ biến nhất kể rằng vào năm 1837, một nhóm người đã đi tới thành phố Lawrence, Kansas, nhậu rồi làm loạn tại các quán bar và cửa hàng trên phố. Họ quậy tới mức ném những chiếc bánh mì màu đỏ vào những cửa hàng và tường nhà, khiến chúng bị nhuốm màu đỏ ối.
